I Ain'tn't Dead!

... So, it's come to my attention that a couple of old friends and acquaintances have checked out this journal and concluded that I've abandoned it some years since. 'Tisn't so, I swear it! For largely professional reasons, it's become really important to me to keep my private life & personal opinions out of the public-to-everyone sphere. One never knows what innocuous thing might be misinterpreted and lead to professional complications, as being too public a poet and fan of classical mythology have already taught me. Silly and unexpected, but true. And then, too, there's the "even if it's harmless and *couldn't* be twisted to look otherwise, if it's personal, do I really want my students to have access to it?" factor.

The long and the short of which adds up to almost all of my journal entries being friends-locked. So if you're poking around, and you're a real-life, 3-D friend & you'd like to be in the loop, just ask me to friend you (and, of course, let me know who you are in real life).

*hugs*,

Spring Break. So much work to do for school that I nearly began to panic last night, but I've done the impossible before when it comes to grading. More sleep than I've made do with since December. More work done in my garden already than I'd managed by the *end* of last summer: buds on grapevines old and new, onions poking curious shoots out of bed, pea seedlings to be staked.

New friends and adventures. A chance to offer some small comfort to a friend in a painful time. Two stolen hours of another friend's conversation, after too long a dearth. Alas, exhaustion soon trumped even talk of code and the next morning found me a little sad, almost unaccountably: I miss him, miss long rambling conversations and music and magic and meals.

Lurked occasionally here, trying to catch up with some other friends. Three, mostly, two of them much too far. Devoured accounts of academic angst, art and avian amour, but couldn't find where to begin replying or fathom how to stop typing and grade, if once I started. I miss them: miss long rambling conversations full of wisdom and debate and exploration and laughter unleashed. The next minutes find me angry with myself, less unaccountably: marriage to my work does not excuse my not telling them so, not seeking out their news and sharing mine more frequently. I find time to see movies now and again, time to read webcomics (ah, sweet half hour of passivity after the first 10 hours of work!). How is it I let the time slip unseized for telling these people they are treasures, and loved?

Still, as much news as regret: how my Huntress hips danced below storm-glanced eyes one too late night while Dominion thundered forth, how Andrew Eldritch's water bottle flew gently, directly to my waiting hand.

How proud I am of my Girl Author Extraordinaire, whose wordsmithing has justly found admirers at Analog as well as among her general admirers. How good it was to hear her voice, and her wife's, and how much I adore them.

How much I like the Boy I'm Kissing, sweet and smart and witty and full of talents, kind and sensible and reasonable and just, perhaps, a little wicked. How girlish-giddy it feels to be sought and adored, to be told the right and the pleasing, to be so clearly a source of joy. To learn someone delightful.

Not all that bears saying, not remotely; but enough to have filled the time I could give it today.

Home sick from school after much intestinal distress, med-resistant headache & fever last night. Now I just have 5 sets of midterm compositions to finish grading for tomorrow. Whee! Gods, I look forward to sleeping enough and not flaking on my friends again after grades are in (due tomorrow).

There's more that goes here, much of it quite positive, but the more I read it the more I realize it needs to be friends-locked. In the meantime... hey, everybody: I still exist & get online sometimes, honest! *waves cheerfully*

So: have I been productive with my morning? Are you kidding?

Here:

CARDINAL: Some might call you proud, some might

call you shy, some wouldn't notice you at all

but that's all right by you. You're

reserved, and content to be an enigma to all

but your very closest friends.
The Cardinal Bird
William Davis Gallagher
Date unknown

A day and then a week passed by:
The redbird hanging from the sill
Sang not; and all were wondering why
It was so still--
When one bright morning, loud and clear,
Its whistle smote my drowsy ear,
Ten times repeated, till the sound
Filled every echoing niche around;
And all things earliest loved by me,--
The bird, the brook, the flower, the tree,--
Came back again, as thus I heard
The cardinal bird.

I've never actually played any of the Final Fantasy games. Well, I never had a console-based gaming system.

So, you FF fans out there... who am I, exactly? ;-)

Nocturnal One Rendering Affection

Real update about school, foo, fender-bender (nobody was hurt), and my amazing friends at some point. Grades were due today, break starts tomorrow after school, must sleep now. Whee!

(One of these years, I really must finagle my term's-end work day down below 12-15 hours. I love what I do, I'd not trade it for anything, but the end of the marking period is just *exhausting*.)

Also, with my own car sequestered in Princeton until tomorrow, I've gotten to hear some downright infectious children's songs on a tape in the car my (amazing) friend lent me so I could still work this week. Some Australian group... maybe the Wiggles? One of the songs is in French, even. Nifty! Reminds me of listening to eclectic anthology albums of kids' songs when I was one.

Extra credit to anyone out there who can name the French song whose tune serves for the English song "Where is Thumb-kin"...

'Night.

Stolen with love from Mgg & Sabrina!
. . .

Game over.
Congratulations.
Learn anything?
That's right...
I stayed up really late coding this.

Well, let me break it down for you:

You have a total of 29 friends
You requested to guess 10 entries.
1 was skipped due to invalid content (surprising?).
You made 9 guesses.
You got 9 correct.
Doing the math for you, that means you got 100% correct.

(Really, I would've been happy with almost anyone except Jayne...)

You scored as Simon Tam. The Doctor. You have a gift for healing that goes beyond education. You took an oath to do no harm, even when your patients have tried to kill you. You are out of place where you are, being used to refined society. However, if you take that stick out of your arse you should be fine.
